‘Welcome to the club that nobody wants to be a member of’. That was one of the first things that Constance Malcolm heard when she lost her son Ramarley Graham in February of 2012 when he was shot and killed in their apartment in the Bronx by a police officer. Ever since she said the same thing more often than she would have liked to other parents. That’s why she became an activist, dedicating her whole life to getting justice for her son and trying to change the system. The short documentary A Life Before This tells the story of a mother who hangs on to the last bit of hope of getting justice for the son she lost, while getting up every day and fighting against police brutality, so that hopefully one day she doesn’t have to greet new members to the club anymore.
